The other morning, my mother and I went out for our usual exercise. The road was familiar, the air crisp, the path ordinary. But what happened when we returned home shook me in the best way. Tucked away in the same yard we’ve walked through every single day was a yam. A massive, fully-grown yam. And not just any yam—this thing was a beast. My jaw dropped. My mother had planted it some time ago, and we had completely forgotten about it.
It had been there. Growing. Developing. Waiting. Right there. Hidden in plain sight.
And just like that, the Holy Spirit whispered to my heart: “What if your blessing has been in plain sight all along?”
That yam became a parable.
Jesus, the Ultimate Blessing in Plain Sight
It reminded me of Jesus. The Messiah. The Savior. He walked dusty roads, sat at ordinary tables, stood in crowded synagogues, and taught in villages, towns, and cities. He wasn’t hidden in the mountains or locked away in palaces. He was in plain sight. And still, many didn’t recognize Him.
Luke 19:44 says, “…because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
The Son of God was right in front of them, and yet their eyes were blind to the blessing. They were waiting for a different kind of king. They wanted someone who fit their expectation. Meanwhile, the King of Kings was walking right past them.
Just like that yam.
The Lessons Hidden in the Soil
I couldn’t help but reflect on a few truths that morning:
1. God Doesn’t Always Announce Growth
Blessings don’t always come with fireworks and fanfare. Sometimes they grow underground—quiet, unnoticed, and undisturbed. And by the time they’re ready, they shock you. Some of the greatest moves of God happen silently.
2. Your Movement May Reveal the Miracle
If my mom and I hadn’t started walking again, we probably wouldn’t have seen that yam. Sometimes the reason you’re not seeing the fruit is because you’re not moving. God may have already prepared the blessing, but it takes your obedience to step into position to notice it.
3. You May Be Walking Past Answers to Prayer
What if you’ve been praying for a breakthrough, and the breakthrough is growing quietly right in your life already? What if you’re walking past it every day, just like we did? The marriage, the business, the gift, the healing—it might already be there.
4. Jesus Is Always Present—Even If You Don’t Recognize Him
In Luke 24, two disciples walked with the resurrected Jesus on the road to Emmaus and didn’t know it was Him until He broke bread. Sometimes, like those disciples, we need divine eyes to see that God is walking with us. Our greatest blessing might be standing right next to us.
5. Spiritual Discernment Is Everything
The yam didn’t suddenly show up. It had been there the whole time. What we lacked was awareness. Spiritually, the same applies. Are we discerning enough to recognize what God is doing around us? In us? Through us?
What Do We Do with This?
We slow down. We pay attention. We ask God to open our eyes.
Maybe your breakthrough isn’t delayed. Maybe it’s been growing all along, quietly waiting for you to notice. Maybe Jesus has been right beside you, and today is the day your spiritual eyes are opening.
A Prayer for Awareness:
Lord, help me not to miss the blessing growing in plain sight. Help me to recognize the seasons, the opportunities, the answers to prayer, and Your presence right here with me. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, may my eyes be opened to see You in my everyday life. I don’t want to walk past what You’ve already provided. Give me discernment and gratitude. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
